Teaching Philosophy

In teaching and as an educator, it is important to have a philosophy to help guide how you teach. Knowing what you value as an educator, will help guide your success in teaching and learning. During my undergrad at SUNY Brockport, I completed a value orientation inventory that taught me that I am an educator who follows structure, understand the content and believes that students and teachers are responsible for the success of the class. Below please take a look at my value orientation reflection.

After reading through the value orientation inventory and completing the value orientation survey, I noticed that a Disciplinary mastery type of teacher. I scored twelve points in this area. When I think of disciplinary I immediately thought I was going to read that I was a bossy type of teacher who strives to be mean to their students. After reading the description of what a disciplinary mastery type of teacher I could definitely see myself as being that type of instructor.

The inventory that I collected in this packet was actually pretty accurate. It states in the article “ Mastery of the subject matter is the major focus of this perspective, and deficits a body of knowledge as what students should know and be able to do in physical education”. After reading just the first sentence I could easily agree that this is the type of person I am. I feel that when it comes to being a physical education teacher it is important to focus on the main aspects of physical education. Although I know as future teachers combining common core is something we must do, I think we can do this but mainly through physical activity.

I believe that this inventory is also very accurate because I am the type of person who likes to see my students demonstrate basic movements and then show me how they can apply them through realistic applications. As an educator it’s important to me that my students are able to do these skills in class, as well as being able to do them outside of the classroom. It is their responsibility as well as my own to make sure they are able to apply these skills I teach them in realistic situations.

Lastly I agree with this inventory because I know that as a future educator I find it very important to have adequate facilities for my students. It is very important in my eyes that students have enough equipment and a classroom that gives them room to maximize participation. Although I cant guarantee ill have the access to adequate facilities in the future when I’m teaching, I still agree that I am a disciplinary mastery because of the way I see success when teaching in a certain environment.

I consider maximized participation and a fun environment two of the most important things when it comes to physical education. It is important that my students are given the opportunity to participate as much as possible. I use to get so frustrated when I was younger when I would have to wait my turn to play a game. It is important that students are each given their own equipment and have enough space to do this. I believe giving students the opportunity to set goals for themselves as well as incorporating the skills I teach them, makes for a great physical education class. Students want to be able to express what they like to do. I feel it is important to give students the opportunity to tell me what they enjoy. When combining their opinions with my own, I am making for a successful learning environment. Lastly I think the most important “goods” of physical education in my opinion is making sure students leave my classroom each day with the knowledge and appreciation of physical education. It is important to me that students live fully active lifestyles. I want them to be able to take the skills, activities and knowledge that I teach them and incorporate it into their daily lives. If I am able to do that, I think that’s what makes physical education so enjoyable.

After inquiring this knowledge of what a disciplinary mastery type of teacher is, I know that when I plan in the future I need to make sure that I find a way to maximize participation. It is my job as a future educator that I need to show my students how exciting physical education is. If I want to guarantee maximized participation I need to have students who want to participate. After reading the information I also know that a disciplinary mastery type of teacher is most effective when teachers have the time to gain proficiency. I also need to make sure that I give all of my students frequent teacher feedback when my students are participating.

Since I find it important to see what my student are capable of doing before I get into my unit plan, it is important for me to assess my students basic movement skills and concepts of physical education. I feel that after I record my data and see what most students struggle in while also getting an idea of what topic would help benefit my students, I could then use to this information to plan my unit. It is very important to me that my students are able to use these skills in more complex situations after learning them in my classroom. I think a great idea would be to assess them in the middle of the unit and see what they are now able to do. Assigning students exit slips and homework assignments are a great way for students to participate in physical education outside of school. Going back to believing it is important to maximize participation for all students, I need to make sure before I choose a unit topic that the school I am in has enough equipment for all of my students.

In conclusion I agree with the information I received through the value orientation inventory. I think the information I obtained is very accurate and explains my views on physical education and how I see myself as a future educator. This information has allowed me to realize how I can plan in the future and what is appropriate for my students learning. I have gained knowledge of the important ways to successfully do this and make myself a teacher who thrives in the physical education department.

Physical education is for all students. Not just the extremely athletic students. This clip from the Little Giant is one that truly inspired me when I was younger, so I hope it can do the same for you.
